How to Choose a Medical School Personal Statement Topic
Common Pitfalls Unfortunately there is no easy answer on how to do this because it is an extremely personal answer that differs for everyone. Ultimately though, your personal statement must answer two essential questions: Why you? Why medicine? But in this process you have to remember who your audience is: an admissions committee that has to read approximately 10,000 applications for its 100 available positions, depending on the school. That also means you will want to create a compelling story that is unique and grabs the attention of the admissions committee. Common Pitfalls There are many ways to write a good personal statement, but there are also many topics that are trite. If your parent is a physician and this has inspired you to also be a doctor, thatââ¬â¢s wonderful but that might not be the most compelling essay. If you suffered an orthopedic injury and had a compassionate doctor that showed you the type of physician you aspire to be, thatââ¬â¢s also wonderful, but the admissions committee has read that same essay many times that day already. Maybe you travelled abroad on a mission trip and found your calling for medicine which is noble, but that is also fraught with potential dangers as a personal statement topic. What if one of those topics truly is the only way to describe my passion for medicine? It is not a definite rule that you have to avoid the topics mentioned above, afterall there will be applicants each year that gain acceptance with those essays. However, be cognizant that you are choosing a tricky path, and your story must be even more unique and compelling to gain the attention of the admissions committee reviewer. Moreover your essay needs to be appropriate for a pre-medical applicant. The mission trip is a minefield because it can be associated with the ills of voluntourism: a pay-to-play experience for students of means, or worse where students are performing medical feats above their level of training. However, if you practiced in your scope of ability and provided meaningful benefit to a community, the topic could make for a wonderful personal statement. So how should I choose my topic then? My first piece of advice is to not read other peopleââ¬â¢s example essays. You do not want to anchor on their topics or restrict your thinking to the examples you have read. It is useful to read other essays, but after you have brainstormed independently. The topic you choose should reflect who you are and be consistent with your other application materials. As an applicant, you are creating a narrative that will bind your activities, secondaries, academic performance, recommendations, etc into a cohesive display of who you are and why a school should accept you. You are creating a theme throughout your application that explains your candidacy for medical school. But, just as you have a theme, so too do many of the schools to which you are applying. Understand your list of schools and your audience. Do they have a research focus? Are they more centered on community-service? Or maybe public health? Not every school fits neatly under one such banner, but they will be judging whether or not you are a good fit based on the narrative you construct. All schools care to some extent about each category, and applicants are considered holistically. But with that said, basing your personal statement on research experience and scientific curiosity might appeal more to Albert Einstein than it would to Cooper of Rowan, and vice versa if your theme is community service. Bottom line Your topic could be a based on a single moment, a couple of anecdotes, an experience, research, your favorite hobby, etc. Often the less obvious topic ideas are the more interesting ones to admissions committees, but most important of all is crafting it into a personal statement that is true to you, your application, your list of schools, and answers our two essential questions: Why you? And why medicine? Do you need help with your upcoming medical school applications? ; Craving more on the subject? Your Medical School Timeline Checklist - Planning Ahead

Plato And Gatto On Divisions In Society Essay Example For Students
Plato And Gatto On Divisions In Society Essay F. Joseph MakoDohertyEN101Writing Assignment 1September 22, 1998The Divisions In education and in other fields of life, people are separated and grouped into nice sections. It has been going on for a long time, even before Plato defined his ideal society. The separating of the good and bad, intelligent and stupid, and high and low class will continue to be a part of who we are as a culture, because our educational structure requires students to learn the basic skills. A problem arises because many people do not fit nicely into a box. I didnt want to be in a box. I was not Gattos good student, who waited on the teacher for instruction. (Gatto 169) I was driven to find the answer before the teacher asked the question, not so I could answer quickly, but for the reason of having time to do what I wanted. I am not one who likes following other peoples trains of thought; I would much rather take a jumping point, and go off in other directions. As in the time when one of my teachers wanted a paper on an animal, and I wrote a story about two boys hunting a squirrel. I didnt like the teachers agenda, but I did it so I could go do my own. When the class worked on mechanical procedures, as in Anyons working-class schools, I looked for reasoning behind why. I thought in original ways, and was successful at staying out of a box. I soon found I had another dilemma, as a result of not fitting in, I failed at relating with other children therefore, was rejected by my peers. When we were all classified and pegged at the start of junior high, the other children were not pleased with the fact that I was different and placed in the high level classes. I thought it odd that most of the lower level children focused their rage on me, when I was very quiet, and rarely bothered anyone. Gatto failed to teach them to envy and fear the better classes. (Gatto 168) It was possibly to create an illusion of them having a higher self-esteem by beating mine down. I just wanted everyone to leave me alone. So, I let my grades fall, but for some reason that made them even madder. As a last resort, I made everyone fear me through various violent and illegal actions. It solved one problem, but in the process, I created myself a criminal record and no one wanted to get near me for fear I might kill him or her. I was the example of following a private drummer, the type teaches dont want. (Gatto 171) My family and I moved away, I grew up, and I started high school. The four years I spent in secondary school were mostly uneventful. The restrictions on what I could do during the school day were levied, as they were in Anyons executive elite school. I joined the track team, learned how to make friends by being nice, and found a group of others like me that I fit in with. High school was very different from junior high; people looked up to me for my intelligence, instead of trying to push me down. Maybe it was because I focused my efforts on being nice and helping others, instead of forgetting about everyone else. I came to understand that school did a poor job at teaching me book-knowledge. Yet it put me in social situations that no amount of bookwork could get me out of; it took non measurable skills such as reasoning with the irrational. Facts couldnt help me out in a physical conflict; logic and experience in dealing with others helped to find a solution. The more that I think about it, the more I believe that I mostly educated myself, and learned about myself through interactions with others. School really didnt teach me book knowledge, but I learned who I am by attending. I am an exception to Gattos lesson on intellectual dependency. I rarely waited for an expert to tell me what to do, and that our economy depends on how well the public follows the advice of experts. (Gatto 170) I believe our culture depends on the economy, but that our economy depends on ideas and new products that only an individual can think of. Gatto pointed out many other principals t hat school teaches as externalities. I made an effort to not follow the schools curriculum, hidden or declared. The focus of Gattos hidden lessons is conformity to the place assigned to you, and how to live in that position well. The confusion Gatto teaches causes the student to break away from natural thought, so the school can instill its own philosophy of reasoning. Gatto correctly connected the patterns of a schools class system to Platos. Plato divided labor into three strict classes: the elite philosopher-rulers, a middle class called auxiliaries, and the lowest class was the labors and tradesmen. Platos class division is similar to the three level system I went through in high school, of honors (high), 1 (middle), and 2 (lower). Schools want their students to be well rounded, a jack of all trades, but they also make the students master of none with bells putting the same value on each subject. The emotional dependency lesson has the student rely on the teacher for rights, know n in school as privileges. Intellectual dependency has the student give up their ability to make decisions without instructions. The testing and grading methods hinder students ability to make opinions about themselves. School convoys the message that students should not have time to themselves, but rather the school should have control of the students daily schedule. The public wants graduating students to have basic skills as a product of twelve years of schooling, which can be taught much more efficiently to the select that posses the desire to learn. The schools purpose was to teach the basics, but I wanted to know the complex. I believe that nearly everything taught to me from school, I could have learned on my own. For the ideas I wanted to learn that the school didnt teach, I learned on my own and on my own time. I didnt let the teachers decide what I would and would not learn; I chose what I wanted to learn. Through making choices, I made myself to be who I want to be. I didn t look to the school for emotional support, because I was a loner. School didnt give me a purpose of life; neither did it teach me a valuable trade for life. School taught me many little things, many unusable facts, and how to do well on standardized tests. Also, School many times limited my exploring. One common instance of its limiting is when an English teacher would give me a list of subjects to write on, with no option for other concepts. In the math and science courses, I valued the few times that the students were asked derive the formulas. School made an effort to engrain the belief that all commonly accepted rules should be obeyed and all should conform to the methods the school taught. The schools view of education was on a different track than mine. .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 , .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .postImageUrl , .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 , .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70:hover , .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70:visited , .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70:active { border:0!important; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70:active , .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70 .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub513c66c510fc3b9e0e7787e01c22c70:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Tesla Motors Essay English Essays

What You Need to Know About Googles Mobile Algorithm Update
Googleââ¬â¢s much-publicized #Mobilegeddon or #Mobilepocalypse algorithm update caused a big stir in the digital marketing world when it was first released in April 2015. The aim was to improve the browsing and search experience for the increasing numbers of mobile users who had, by that point, surpassed desktop users when it came to ecommerce searches. The change resulted in mobile-friendly pages receiving a boost in search rankings done by mobile users but it only applied to individual pages rather than entire websites. This past March, Google announced that it would be doubling-down on its efforts to ââ¬Å"make the web more mobile friendly.â⬠The now fully implemented algorithm change will now be boosting the search rankings of mobile-friendly websites across all devices. Furthermore, entire websites will now be evaluated, page-by-page. So this means that sites that are still not optimized for mobile use will be penalized with a lower search rank. Recap of the key differences between the 2015 and 2016 updates 2015 Update Some websites saw a change in mobile traffic Search result changes applied to mobile users only Individual pages were evaluated on mobile-friendliness 2016 Update Websites may see a change in traffic from all devices Search result changes will apply to users of all devices Entire websites will be evaluated on mobile-friendliness What to do Test your website If youââ¬â¢ve already made your website mobile-friendly, youââ¬â¢re probably fine. But if your website requires mobile users to zoom in and out in order to read content, your site is not mobile-friendly. Google has a page that will test websites for mobile-friendliness. If you donââ¬â¢t pass, look into getting a mobile-friendly website as soon as possible. Update to a mobile site If youââ¬â¢re not using content management systems for your website, you may need to hire a developer to build a mobile version for your website. Google recommends opting for a responsive web design rather than a separate mobile website. Additionally, a responsive design will allow for your URLs and HTML to remain the same. Ensure the content itself is mobile-friendly Having a mobile-friendly user interface is the first step. It is also important to have mobile-friendly content. Common mobile mistakes that some websites make include: Unplayable content: Flash objects and some embedded video sources are not supported on all devices. Interstitials and pop-ups: Interstitials are pages that are displayed before or after the expected content page. This can include advertisements and age confirmations pages. Proceeding past these pages can be difficult for mobile users. The same can be applied to pop-ups. Broken links and redirects: If your mobile site utilizes separate mobile URLs, be sure to test your links to ensure they all work when browsing in mobile. Slow loading pages: Slow loading pages can be frustrating to users and can cut into their monthly data usage. Mobile is here to stay Mobile traffic will continue to grow. Add to this Googleââ¬â¢s algorithm updates and itââ¬â¢s clear that all websites need to be optimized for mobile to be successful. But remember that even when youââ¬â¢ve made all the necessary changes for this update, you canââ¬â¢t let up. You have to keep creating excellent content to continue to attract customers and maintain or improve your search ranking.

Psychology - Personal Statement Example Explaining this fact we see that, on the one hand, it was ethical because it followed the guidelines of a special Stanford ethics committee that allowed and approved it. Experimentââ¬â¢s participants were told that they would be assigned either the role of the guard, or the role of the prisoner in a completely random manner, and they all volunteered to play any of these roles for $ 15 a day for a period not exceeding two weeks. They signed a contract guaranteeing them a minimally adequate diet, clothing, shelter and medical care, as well as monetary rewards, and instead signed an ââ¬Ëintentionââ¬â¢ to perform an interim role during the whole experiment. On the other hand, it was unethical because the participants-prisoners were forced to stay in a simulated prison for the whole day during the study period and they were suffered, being humiliated by their fellows over the period of the experiment. Continuing the discussion of this ethical question we can mention that it was n ot right to trade ââ¬Ësufferingsââ¬â¢ experienced by participants for the knowledge gained by the research, and understanding this fact the experiment was stopped mush earlier.

Defiance of Gender-Based Work Ethics in Bartleby and The Yellow Wallpap
Defiance of Gender-Based Work Ethics in Bartleby and The Yellow Wallpaperà à à à The issue of gender was an influential factor for writers in the 19th century, as Herman Melville and Charlotte Perkins Gilman explore in their pieces. In "Bartleby," for instance, Herman Melville presents Bartleby as an employed scrivener-his service to the narrator is in the form of copying documents. This form of labor is appropriate for Bartleby according to 19th century society, which supported and approved of the male professional writer. However, he refuses this duty, and through his "I-would-prefer-not-to" statements, he challenges the standards held to him by society, reinforcing his individualism. à à à On the other hand, in "The Yellow Wallpaper," the female narrator is expected and ordered not to work-not to write-by her family and, in turn, by her society. But just as Bartleby refuses the expectations set upon him, so does "Wallpaper's" narrator. This reverses "Bartleby's" situation-culture does not want her to write, but she does so anyway. According to this presentation by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the 19th century female writer is suppressed and discouraged by the males of the era-an idea further supported by Richard Polwhele's poem "The Unsex'd Females." In his piece, Polwhele denounces the female writer and criticizes her advancement in the literary world. Therefore, although both Bartleby and "Wallpaper's" narrator have labor standards to live with, through their defiance of these 19th century ethics, they present themselves as individuals through the work of writing. à à à In the case of "Bartleby," many examples imply the acceptance of writing as a male profession. Firstly, all of the people in the office are men. "At the... ...accepted and encouraged work. On the other hand, the female writer in "The Yellow Wallpaper" individualizes herself by working when she is not supposed to be, and by being the alleged unnatural woman that Polwhele describes. She defies what is socially acceptable and chooses to express herself through writing. The end result is the same-both characters grow as individuals through their social dissent. à Works Cited Gilman, Charlotte Perkins. "The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories." Voucher Threat
A popular topic in education reform is the impact school vouchers will have on Americaâ⬠s public education. Public education is at a serious threat do to the debate over education vouchers. School vouchers will redirect the flow of education funding, channeling it directly to individual families rather than to school districts. This will result in less government funding going towards improving public schools, lowering class sizes, and purchasing supplies and may eventually cause the downfall of public education all together. The issues of school vouchers go beyond the classroom and are borderline unconstitutional. The idea of public funds being spent on private schools raises issues in its self. Public funds being spent on private religious schooling will raise interesting questions about the separation between church and state. Most nonpublic schools in America right now are run by religious organizations. Is it even constitutional for tax money to be spent religious schooling? One of the most widely believed untruths about school vouchers is that it will allow poor inner city kids to have more opportunities to go to private schools, however compelling this argument may seem the truth of the matter is that vouchers will siphon the money out of the cities public schools causing the children whose parents still cant afford the subsidized tuition of these pricey private schools to receive an inferior education and create a large underclass of students who are trapped in a public school without enough resources to receive a quality education. The fact of the matter is that school vouchers will create a competitive market in the education field causing the strongly funded private schools to thrive while the public schools that this country was built on to slowly deteriorate in quality due to fewer tax dollars being spent on the resources needed for public education to succeed. The action I would like to see the government take on this issue is to focus more attention on improving public education, instead of the redirecting of taxpayerâ⬠s money to private education. The choice is clear if more attention was placed on creating a better learning environment in our public schools all children could benefit not just those who can afford subsidized private schools. Instead of offering an alternative to ineffective unsafe public schools why not focus our attention on improving those schools. Taking money away from already troubled public school systems without offering any solutions to the existing problems is bound to create a downward spiral in the already shaky public school systems. The low impact approach I would take on this matter is to set up rallies especially in those areas where the vouchers would have the largest negative impact. Those areas being the troubled school systems of the inner cities. I would get forty or fifty people together to go to their local or district office and talk with their senator or state rep. I would start up a web page supporting my issue with links to advocacy groups and information that take a similar stand on the issue of school vouchers. In the web site I would also include a prefab letter explaining the negative effects of school vouchers that viewers could download, sign and send to there local or state representative to help support my issue. Furthermore I would write to the editors of my local newspapers and explain my stand on the issue in a small column that would reach many potential voters. As an attempt to get some free media attention while spreading the word of my issue I would hold a public forum on vouchers and have the local news cover it. The forum would inform citizens how they can get involved. I would hold the forum in a local schools gymnasium and try to get some influential speakers who support my issue in hopes to gain more supporters who will take action against school vouchers. In a high impact manner I would use an entirely different approach. Supposing I had a year off from life and 100,000 dollars to contribute to the fight against vouchers I would start by getting national attention. I would try to team up with some key officials in congress who take the same position as I do. I would try to hold a national rally against vouchers. As an attempt to gain wide range publicity I would set up a web site for volunteer support effort. I would use the web site to keep my supporters updated on rallies and protests supporting my cause. I would set up a national call in day via the web where I get membership of the site to call into congress and support our stand on the issues. I would help raise money by holding rallies and support groups for members of congress and other political leaders who are running for office and who support my issue. As would organize bus trips from inner cities around the country to Washington D. C. so that constituents could go to the members of congress that represent their district and explain to the congressmen their concerns with vouchers. All of these things would help to raise concern over school vouchers and hopefully have an effect on votes when the issue comes up in legislation.

Domestic Violence And Child Abuse Essay - 1311 Words
I chose to do my research on domestic violence and child abuse for many different reasons. As a young woman and hopefully a future mother, I wanted to be well educated on domestic violence and child abuse so that I can hopefully prevent these from happening to me of my future children. By researching domestic violence and child abuse I was able to learn about warning signs, as well as other useful information regarding these topics, such as where to seek help. Also, as someone who wants to be a teacher and who works heavily with children, I am a mandated reported. Therefore I need to know a lot of information about child abuse so that I can know the symptoms as well as how to report it. Also, knowing about domestic violence may be able to allow me to help parents I encounter who face domestic violence. Therefore, I chose this topic in order to keep me well informed since it pertains so heavily to my future career. While doing research I found many interesting facts about child abuse and domestic violence, but there were four that really stood out to me. The first fact is that there is a strong link between child abuse and domestic violence. In fact, most cases of domestic violence occur in households that also experience child abuse. In fact, ââ¬Å"for three in five families where a child has suffered physical or mental abuse or neglect, a parent will have experienced domestic violenceâ⬠(Sadler, 2004). In theory, there are a variety of reasons why people abuse animals.
